Troubleshooting: I Lost My 2FA Device and Now I’m Locked Out

Sorry to hear this! If you have saved your backup codes as described in the 2FA guide, this is the time to use them. With most account providers, when you are prompted to enter a code from your two factor authentication app, there will be an option to instead enter one of your backup codes. Follow that flow to login.

If you do not have backup codes, things get considerably more complicated.

  1. Try logging in from a computer that has previously logged into the account. In some cases, this will allow you to skip the two factor authentication.
  2. You can go into your account settings and set up a new two factor authentication app.

If this doesn’t work, then your only option will be to contact the technical support for your account provider. In some cases, if you have not set up a backup, there may be no way to regain access to your accounts.
